USC Gould School of Law 대학원 입학설명회가 오는 12월 14일 서울에서 개최된다. 본교 입학담당자가 내한하여 미국 법학 석사 프로그램인 Masters of Law(LL.M) 프로그램에 관해 중점적으로 설명하고 지원 요강과 장학금제도, LA생활 등에 관해 안내한다. 이밖에도 한국 동문들이 그들의 경험담을 나누고 참가자들과 질의 응답시간도 가질 예정이다. 

LL.M 과정은 현직 법조인이나 공무원 또는 기업에서 법과 관련된 업무 종사자를 대상으로 미국 법/법률 시스템 등을 교육하는 프로그램이다. 참석을 희망하는 이는 홈페이지에서 사전 등록을 하면 되고  참가비는 무료이다.

USC Summer Programs for High School Students는 고등학생들이 대학입학 전에 다양한 학문을 접하고 대학생활을 경험할 수 있는 좋은 기회이다. 학생들은 주 5일 하루 5시간 이상 집중적으로 강의를 듣고 워크샵, 현장 학습 등도 참가할 기회를 갖는다. 4주 Credit 프로그램과 2주 Non-Credit 프로그램으로 나뉘어져 있어 학생들이 택일할 수 있다.

USC Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute 의 Associate Director이며 USC Keck 의과대학  Imaging Genetics Center의 Director인 Paul Thomson 박사와 그의 팀이 ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis) Center를 설립했다. Thomson박사는 뉴로이미징 유전학 분야의 세계적 석학으로서 이미 전세계 39개국 900여명 연구자들과의 네트워킹인 ENIGMA Consortium을 조직했으며, 참여 연구자들은 다양한 뇌영상과 유전 데이타를 취합, 분석하여 정신분열증과 자폐증, 조울증, 외상후 스트레스장애 등에 관한 수많은 뇌이미징 논문들을 발표해왔다. 

신설된 ENIGMA Center는 기존의 Consortium과 National Institute on Aging의 68만 2천달러 보조금을 이용하여, 뇌 노화와 관련된 글로벌한 연구를 진행한다. 연구진들은 인간의 노화에 수반되는 질병의 위험성을 줄이기 위해, 다양한 인종과 문화, 환경을 토대로 뇌 노화와 유전적, 후천적, 혹은 환경적 요인과의 상관관계에 대해 연구할 예정이다.

한국에서도 2015년 KSAIST의 뇌인지 공학 프로그램 설립기념 심포지엄에서 Thompson교수가 ENIGMA 프로젝트에 대한 기조연설을 한 바있다. 

Paul Thompson, PhD, associate director of the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute (INI) and director of the Imaging Genetics Center (IGC) at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, has already united hundreds of researchers in 39 countries with the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) consortium. Through ENIGMA, scientists team up to pool and analyze brain imaging and genetics data — and they’ve published some of the largest imaging studies of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder and more. Read more

USC Shoah Foundation이 설립 25주년을 기념하여 USC University Park Campus에 새로운 글로벌 재단 본부를 개소했다. 새 사무소는 기존 시설에 비해 두 배 이상의 크기로, 더 많은 방문객을 유치하고 쌍방향적인 자료 전시를 할 수 있도록 설계됐다. 재단의 설립자인 유명 영화감독이자 제작자인 Steven Spielberg와 USC interim President인 Wanda M. Austin 그리고 USC Shoah Foundation Finci Viterbi Executive Director인 Stephen Smith 등 많은 축하객이 개소식에 참석했다. 이 자리에서 Steven Spielberg는 Stephen Smith가 비전을 갖고 재단 운영에 헌신한 것에 대해 감사의 뜻을 표했다. 그는 또한 지난 10월 27일 피츠버그에서 발생한 유대인 회당 총기난사 사건을 언급하며 Shoah Foundation이 증오와 차별과 관련된 문제에 맞서 더욱 범세계적으로 활동할 것을 피력했다.

USC Shoah Foundation은 홀로코스트 및 제노사이드를 겪은 목격자와 생존자들의 증언 자료를 수집하여 반차별 교육과 행동에 대한 강력한 목소리를 내고자 설립된 비영리기관이다. Steven Spielberg는 영화 "쉰들러리스트 (Schindler 's List)"를 완성한 지 1년 후인 1994년에 "Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation"라는 이름으로 이 재단을 설립했으며, 2006년 1월 USC와 파트너십을 맺고 "USC Shoah Foundation — The Institute for Visual History and Education"으로 명칭을 변경했다. 현재 55,000 건이 넘는 증언자료를 보유하고 있으며, Visual History Archive와 제노사이드 연구 센터 및 중등교육기관을 위한 교육 프로그램도 운영하고 있다.  

USC Shoah Foundation — The Institute for Visual History and Education embarked on a new chapter on Tuesday when it unveiled its new global headquarters on the USC University Park Campus.

The event marked the start of the institute’s 25th anniversary, a time that will propel its work into new frontiers as it continues its mission of sharing the 55,000 testimonies of survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides to foster empathy and respect. Read more

USC Viterbi 공대가 미 국무부의 Diplomacy Lab 파트너 기관으로 선정됐다. Diplomacy Lab이란 미 국무부에서 학생과 교수들에게 국무부의 글로벌 정책에 관한 실무적 경험을 제공하기 위해 창안한 프로그램이다. 이로써 Viterbi 공대는 2019년부터 교수진과 학생들이 국제문제와 관련된 시급한 이슈에 대한 해결책을 모색하는 중심허브로서의 역할을 할 것이며, civil and environmental engineering, industrial and systems engineering, international relations 세 학과의 교수를 맡고 있는 Najmedin Meshkati가 리더를 맡게될 예정이다.

Diplomacy Lab을 통해 학생들은 각 분야의 전문지식을 갖춘 교수진의 지도하에 세계의 현안문제들을 탐구하는데 참여하게 되며, 국무부의 정책입안 과정에 직접 이바지하게 된다. 국무부는 매학기 Viterbi 공대를 포함한 30개의 파트너 대학에 제안된 프로젝트를 나누어 주며, 대학에서는 연구입찰을 통해 선정된 팀이 학기동안 국무부에서 설계된 목표를 달성할 수 있는 작업을 수행한다.

Engineering Diplomacy Course를 가르쳤던 Meshkati교수는 “이 파트너십은 대외정책과 국제관계 개발에 엔지니어링 사고를 융합시키려 했던 우리의 노력을 인정하는 것이다" 라고 언급했다. 

The U.S. Department of State has selected the University of Southern California as a partner institution for Diplomacy Lab, a program designed to provide students and faculty with hands-on experience on global policy challenges.

Starting in the spring of 2019, USC Viterbi will serve as the central hub for this new USC – State Department partnership, which will call upon faculty and their students from across the campus to consider solutions for urgent issues governing international affairs. The program’s academic lead is Najmedin Meshkati, professor of civil and environmental engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and international relations. Read more

USC 한국동문회의 송년의 밤 행사가  지난 12월 3일 서울 강남에서 열렸다. 약 150명의 동문이 참석한 가운데 트로잔 가족의 우애를 나누며 2018년을 마무리하는 시간을 가졌다. 이날 송년회에서는 특히 12대 동문회장인 박인구 회장의 이임식과 13대 신임회장 함영준회장의 취임식이 진행됐다. 박회장은 인사말을 통해 USC의 위상이 높아진것을 주지시키고, 동문 상호간의 협력이 강화되기바란다는 당부를 전했다. 함회장과 USC Korea 최희연 디렉터는 각각 동문회와 USC 한국 사무소가 마련한 공로패를 박회장에게 전달했다. 한편 신임 함영준 동문회장은 취임사에서 앞으로 소그룹활동의 지원과 본교 행사의 적극적인 참여로 동문회를 발전시키겠다는 포부를 밝혔다. 함회장은 USC Marshall IBEAR동문으로 현재 주식회사 오뚜기의 CEO를 맡고 있다. 

USC음대 동문들의 공연과, 동문 및 학부모회의 협찬으로 이번 송년회는 더욱 화려하고 풍성하게 치러졌으며, 단체 사진 촬영으로 마지막 순서를 장식했다. 

The USC Alumni Club of Korea hosted a year-end banquet on December 3 in Seoul. Approximately 150 alumni attended and shared with each other the Trojan family friendship. Ingu Park, Vice Chair of Dongwon Group, who served as president of Alumni club for the past two years gave a farewell speech. He reminded the audience of USC's prestigious status and encouraged the alumni to continue to support with each other. Two appreciation plaques were presented from Alumni club and USC Korea Office. 

Young Joon Ham, a graduate of IBEAR, Marshall Business School was named the next president of the USC Alumni Club of Korea. He currently is CEO of Ottogi Group. He pledges to improve the Alumni club by supporting small group activities and engaging in USC's various events. 

Adding to the success of the event was an impressive performance by the Thornton Music School alumni as well as many donations from alumni and Trojan Parent Network.
