지난 5월 10일 USC의 136번째 졸업식이 거행됐다. 약 6만 명의 하객이 지켜보는 가운데 1만 9천 여명의 졸업생들이 학위를 받았다. 축사 연사로는 USC동문이자 흑인 여성 최초로 California State Assembly에서 의장을 맡았던 Karen Bass 전 미연방하원의원이 등장하여 졸업생들에게 "Fight On"의 정신에 대해 강조했다. 그녀는 "Fight On"이 소극적인 사회 참여를 지양하고 트로잔으로서 세상에 적극적으로 임하는 정신과 헌신의 에너지를 뜻하기를 희망한다고 말했다. 졸업생 대표 연사로 선정된 Ivana Giang은 베트남 난민 가정에서 자란 자신의 배경을 언급하며, 아직도 소수인종과 난민, 경제적 약자와 성적 소수자 등 다양한 소수자들에게는 세상의 아름다운 것들을 경험할 수 있는 권리가 주어지지 않았다는 것을 인정해야 한다며, 누구나 평등한 권리를 누릴 수 있는 사회로 나아갈 것을 피력했다. 또한 USC 임시 총장인 Wanda M. Austin은 "여러분이 어떤 분야에 진출하든지 자신감을 가지고 미래를 맞이하라"라고 말하며 졸업생들을 격려했다.

For Ivana Giang, USC’s 2019 commencement was a tearful one.

Giang admits she’s prone to crying, whether it’s after a dance competition or while mentoring kids in South L.A. But on Friday, her tears symbolized a new milestone as USC’s 136th valedictorian.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 19,000 graduates and roughly 60,000 onlookers, she asked the university to continue to fight for students like herself, people from underrepresented backgrounds. USC 신입생을 위한 SCend Off 행사가 7월 12일 오후 6시 30분부터 오뚜기 본사 대강당에서 개최된다. SCend Off는 미국의 각 도시나 해외에서 그 지역의 신입생을 환영하기 위해 현지의 동문들이 주최하는 행사로, 한국에서는 USC 한국동문회 산하의 20-30대 동문들의 모임인 Trojan 21이 주축이 되어 매년 여름에 열고 있다. 올해에는 USC 한인 재학생 동아리인 KISA (한인유학생학생회), KBSO (한인비즈니스학생회), KCOSO (Korean Career Oriented Student Organization)가 함께 프리젠테이션을 준비하여 신입생들이 알아야 할 여러 사항들을 설명하고 또한 1:1 상담도 제공할 예정이다. USC 한국총동문회에서 SCend Off 행사의 초대장을 발송하며, 참가를 원하는 학생과 학부모는 7월 1일(월)까지 RSVP 링크 에서 응답제출을 하기 바란다.

올해 The USC Kaufman School of Dance가 설립이래 첫 졸업식을 맞이하여 33명의 졸업생을 배출했다. 졸업식에서 Jodie Gates 학장은 Kaufman 무용대학의 첫  졸업생들이 입학할 당시의 모습을 회상하며 축사를 시작했다. 당시 2014년 지원한 수백 명의 학생들 가운데 39명이 입학 허가를 받았으며, 그 중 33명이 Kaufman 무용대학에 2015년 가을학기에 입학했다. Gates 학장은 "Kaufman 무용대학을 선택한 용감한 여러분들은 4년 동안의 노력과 열정으로 새로운 유형의 무용 예술인으로 거듭났다"라고 말하며 졸업생들을 축하했다. 또한 저명한 무용가이자 여러 예술 방면에서 활동한 Mikhail Baryshnikov가 졸업 축사 연사를 맡았다. 그는 "스스로에게 위험을 감수하고 때로는 실패할 수 있는 기회를 주라"라고 말하며 졸업생들에게 무용가로서의 도전 정신을 강조했다. 

USC has awarded degrees in history, music, biology and computer science, to name a few. But until Friday, it had never awarded a degree in dance.

USC Price 행정대학원의 MRED (Master of Real Estate Development/ 부동산개발 석사)프로그램의 학생들이 5월 13-17일 한국을 방문했다. 이는 International Development 수업의 일환으로서, MRED 프로그램의 디렉터인 Richard Green 교수 인솔 하에 Russ Sommer  Advisor와 9명의 대학원생이 내한했다. 이들은 동문 기업인 Savoy 그룹을 비롯해 동문들이 근무하고 있는 CBRE, ARA Korea, AIP자산운용 등을 방문했다. 이번 방문 프로그램을 함께 준비한 박성제 MRED 동문은 회사방문에 협조한 동문회 관계자들에게 고마움을 표하며, 최근 미국 내 한국에 대한 관심이 증대하고 있고 또한 한국 투자자들의 미국 부동산 투자가 활발해지고 있는 실정이어서, 앞으로도 이 프로그램의 학생들이 지속적으로 한국을 방문할 것으로 예상한다고 말했다.

Nine students of the USC Price Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) led by Professor Richard Green and Advisor Russ Sommer, visited Korea on May 13-17 to take part in an international course elective offered through the program. They visited Savoy Group, an alumni enterprise, as well as CBRE, ARA Korea, and AIP Asset Mangement, all of which are companies where alumni currently work. Mr. Sung Je Park, an MRED alumnus, arranged the visits together with the MRED program staff. Park expressed appreciation to the alumni for their cooperation with the program and mentioned that MRED students will continue to visit Korea especially with Americans' ever-growing interest in Korea and Koreans' attraction to investment opportunities in the U.S.

USC 한국동문회가 지난 5월 11일 기업탐방 행사를 주최했다. 올해 행사는 USC 한국 동문회 회장인 오뚜기 함영준 회장이 동문들을 평택의 오뚜기라면 공장으로 초청하여 진행됐다. 60여명의 USC 동문들과 가족들이 행사에 참가하여 공장을 견학했고, 이후 해군2함대와 사령부내 천안함기념관, 충무동산, 서해수호관을 방문하며 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈다. 기업탐방행사는 매년 5월에 진행되며 동문과 그 가족이라면 누구나 참가할 수 있다. 

On May 11th, the USC Alumni Club of Korea held an annual enterprise visit day. President of the USC Alumni Club of Korea, Young Joon Ham, invited alumni and their families to the Ottogi Ramen Factory in Pyeongtaek. More than 60 Trojans participated in the event. The USC Alumni Club's visit to an alumni enterprise is an annual event and any alumni and their family members are welcome to join.
