USC신입생들을 위한 SCend Off행사가 지난 7월 12일 서울 함하우스에서 열렸다. USC 한국동문회가 주최한 이 행사에는 신입생 50여 명을 비롯해 학부모와 동문, 재학생 등 약 100여 명이 참석했다. 행사는 한국동문회 함영준 회장의 환영사로 시작됐으며  USC Korea office의 최희연 디렉터와  장지원 학부모 회장의 인사말도 이어졌다.  한인비즈니스 학생회를 비롯한 USC한인학생 동아리의 임원들이 차례로 학교 내외의 생활을 소개하고 이 프레젠테이션이 끝난 후에는  학부와 대학원 입학생, 학부모들이 각각 소그룹으로 모여 질의 응답시간을 가졌다. 

SCend Off 행사는 각 지역의 동문들이 신입생들을 환영하고 친목을 나누며 학교 생활에 필요한 정보와 경험을 나누는 행사로, 매년 가을학기 개강전  여름에 열리고 있다. 한국에서는 USC 한국동문회의 소속인 젊은 동문들의 모임인 Trojan 21이 주축이 되어 USC한인학생 동아리와 함께 행사를 준비하고 있다.

올해에는 학부생 30명을 포함해 약 100명의 한국학생이 USC에 입학했다. 

The 2019 USC SCend off in Korea, hosted by USC Alumni Club of Korea, was held on July 12th at the Ham House in Seoul. The SCend Off is an annual event to welcome and to provide useful information for incoming USC undergraduate and graduate students. The event attracted more than 100 attendees including new students, current students, family, and alumni. Attendees were greeted with a welcome speech by Young Joon Ham, President of USC Alumni Club of Korea, Hee-yeon Choi, Director of USC Korea, and Ji Won Chang, President of Trojan Family Network. Following these speeches, the key members from USC Korean students club including KBSO (Korean Business Students Organization), KISA( Korean International Students Association) provided presentations regarding on/off-campus life.  The event also included group sessions for Q/A discussion. Approximately 100 Korean new students enrolled at USC this year. 

USC Leonard Davis 노년학 대학에서는 급증하는 고연령층 인구의 건강관리를 위한  Medical Gerontology석사과정을 신설했다. 2019년 가을학기부터 시작되는 이 혁신적인 프로그램은 노년의 삶의 환경과 영양관리, 돌봄의 문제 등을 포함한 노화에 대한 종합적인 접근으로서 12-18개월에 과정을 끝마칠 수 있으며, 온라인 과정 옵션도 계획중이라 한다. 노인과 그 가족들의 소통 문제, 복합적인 만성질환 관리, 노화에 대한 심리적 이해, 건강관리 테크놀로지, 질병예방과 영양, 가정과 지역사회에서의 안전수칙 등에 관한 다양한 주제들이 교육과정에서 다뤄질 예정이다.  

USC Leonard David 노년학대학에서는 이 Medical Gerontology 프로그램이외에도 여섯 개의 석사과정이 있고 그중 선구적인 프로그램으로는 Biology of Aging 박사과정, Nutrition, Healthspan and Longevity 석사과정, 또한 2020년 봄부터 시작되는 Senior Living Hospitality석사과정이 있다.

In order to better prepare health care practitioners to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population, the University of Southern California Leonard Davis School of Gerontology is introducing a new Master of Arts in Medical Gerontology. Beginning in the fall of 2019, this innovative program will provide students with a comprehensive approach to aging, which includes examining older adults’ living environments, nutritional practices and care needs.  Read more

USC Marshall 비즈니스 대학의 신임 학장으로 세계적인 정치경제학자인  Geoffrey Garrett이 선정돼 2020년 7월에 부임할 예정이다. 그는 세계경제, 정치, 비즈니스와 매니지먼트의 탁월한 전문가로서 현재 University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School의 학장으로 재직하고 있다.  호주 출신으로 Duke대학에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았으며 2001년부터 2005년까지 USC에서 Business Administration, International Relations 등을 가르치기도 했고 University of Sydny와 University of New South Wales in Australia의 학장직을 거쳐 2014년부터 Wharton School을 이끌어 왔다.

USC의 신임총장 Carol L. Folt박사는 "Geoffrey Garrett이야말로 세계정상의 정치경제학자로서 앞으로 USC Marshall 대학을 이끌어갈 가장 이상적인 적임자이다"라고 평했다. 신임학장이 부임하기 전까지는 Marshall에서 vice-dean 직 등 20여 년간 재직해온 Gareth M. James가 Interim dean으로 일할 것으로 전해졌다.  

USC leaders have selected world-renowned political economist Geoffrey Garrett as dean of the USC Marshall School of Business.

Garrett is an expert in global economics, politics, business and management who currently serves as dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He will join USC Marshall in July 2020.

Dr. Carol L. Folt 신임총장이  7월 1일부터 직무를 시작했다. 그러나 취임식과 이에 관련된 여러 행사는 가을학기가 시작된 후 9월 18-20일에 열린다. Alumni Park에서 거행될 총장 취임식은 기존의 전통 의식을 따르고 타 대학의 대표단과 USC Faculty 등이 참석할 예정이다. 한편 축하연은  McCarthy Quad와 주변지역에서 열리는데  Dr. Folt가 생태학자인만큼  환경보호원칙을 우선으로 가급적 폐기물을 남기지 않도록 하고  일회용용기 등을 사용하지 않는다고 한다. Dr. Folt의 총장 취임식은 그녀의 비전과 가치관, 학생과 교직원을 포용하는 태도, 환경보호 정신을 반영하는 행사가 될 것이다.  

학교에서는 취임식에 맞추어 다채로운 축하행사도 기획 중이다. 9월 18일에는 Health Sciences Campus에서 심포지움이 개최되며 University Park Campus의 Bovard Auditorium에서는 학생들의 작품전시와 공연이 열리는 arts showcase가 준비돼 있다. 또한 9월 19일에는 University Park Campus에서 심포지움, 그리고 9월 20일에  총장 취임식과 유타대학과의 풋볼 경기가 펼쳐질 예정이다.

Carol L. Folt’s upcoming inauguration as USC president will reflect her vision and values, embracing students, faculty and staff while also protecting the environment.

Events scheduled for Sept. 18-20 include an arts showcase and festivities during a Trojans football game. Organizers are also planning several TEDx-style academic symposia on topics from health to the humanities. These will bookend the main event: a formal inauguration ceremony and celebratory lunch for thousands of members of the Trojan Family.

The tentative schedule:

• Wednesday, Sept. 18: Symposium on Health Sciences Campus; arts showcase at Bovard Auditorium on the University Park Campus featuring student works and performances.
• Thursday, Sept. 19: Symposium on the University Park Campus.
• Friday, Sept. 20: Inauguration ceremony at Alumni Park and lunch on McCarthy Quad and surrounding areas (open to students, faculty and staff); football game against Utah.

지난 7월 30일,  U.S. News & World Report가 발표한  2019-20 Best Hospitals Honor Roll에서 USC Keck Medical Center가 16위에 선정됐다. 이 Best Hospitals 순위는 매년 발표되는 것으로, 환자와 의사들에게 생명을 위협하는 상태에 대한 치료뿐 아니라 선택적인 의료를 어디서 받을 것인가에 대한 결정을 도와준다. 미국내 4500여개의 메디컬 센터들을 대상으로 16개의 전문분야 등을 평가했으며 이중 3퍼센트인 165개의 병원만이 최소 1개의 전문분야 순위에 선정됐다. Keck Medical Center는 9개의 전문분야 우수병원에 뽑혔는데 그중 비뇨기과학은 4위를 차지해 남캘리포니아에서 가장 높은 순위를 차지했다. 이밖에 노인병학이 6위, 안과학 11위, 심장수술 11위,신장학 13위, 신경학과 신경수술이 16위를 차지했다. 이밖에도 암 치료와 폐 수술, 대장암 수술 등의  여러 분야에서 높은 평가를 받았다. 

 Keck Hospital of USC와 USC Norris Cancer Hospital을 포함한 USC Keck Medical Center는 올해로 창립 10주년을 맞이했으며, 이미 캘리포니아  톱 5 병원,  LA지역 톱 3 병원의 하나로 뽑힌 바 있다. Keck Medical Center의 CEO, Tom Jackiewicz는 이 Honor Roll 인정은 병원의 괄목할 만한 성장과 함께  연구에 기초한 세계정상급의 아카데믹한 의료를 꾸준히 해왔다는 것을  증명하는 것이라고 하며  수준높은 의료진과 선구적인 연구원들 , 또한 환자들에게 최고의 서비스를 제공하려는 헌신적인 직원들의 덕분이라고 말했다.

Keck Medical Center of USC, which includes Keck Hospital of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital, was ranked No. 16 on the U.S. News & World Report 2019-20 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, hospital officials announced early Tuesday. The academic medical center, which recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary, also was ranked among the top 5 hospitals in California and top 3 hospitals in Los Angeles.  Read more
