지난 9월 20일 USC의 제 12대 총장, Dr. Carol L. Folt 의  총장취임식이 학생과 교직원, 동문과 커뮤니티 지도자 등 많은 하객이 참석한 가운데 Alumni Memorial Park에서 열렸다. 재단 이사장인 Rick Caruso를 비롯해서 대학원생 대표, Eric Garcetti  LA 시장과  UCLA의 Chancellor인 Gene Block 등이 각각 축사를 전했으며, 임시총장이었던 Wanda M. Austin이 Folt 총장에게 presidential medallion을 수여했다. 

The Trojan Family came together Friday to give an enthusiastic welcome to Carol L. Folt as she was formally inaugurated as USC’s 12th president.

Thousands gathered in Alumni Memorial Park for a ceremony that carried forward longstanding traditions but also brought new directions. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and community members welcomed Folt and heard the new president lay out an ambitious agenda for the university and the future.

USC Viterbi 공대가 Machine Learning/ Data Science에 촛점을 맞춘 Electrical and Computer Engineering석사학위를 신설했다. 이는 현대사회의 엄청난 데이터 물량 속에서 테크놀로지와 사회에 유의미한 데이터를 골라낼 수 있는 전문인력 양성의 필요성에 부응하기 위한 것이다.

교과과정은 data science의 이론과 적용, machine learning과 signal, information processing에 중점을 둔것으로, Computer Science 대학원 과정에 관심이 있고 학부때 Electrical Engineering을 수학한 학생들에게 알맞은 프로그램이라고 한다.

USC의 2019년도 가을 입학식이 지난 8월 22일에  열렸다. 3000여명의 신입생과 가족, 교직원이 Trojan Marching Band의 음악에 이끌려 입학식 행사장인 Alumni Memorial Park로 모였다. 부임후 53일째로 첫 입학식을 맞은 Carol L. Folt 신임총장은 " 오늘 우리는 함께 USC여정을 떠나는 것이다"라고 표현하고, 1884년 USC의 첫번째 졸업생 대표였던 Minnie Miltimore와 인류최초의 달 착륙자였던 USC 졸업생 Neil Armstrong의  일화를 나누며 "학생들은 지금 트로잔 페밀리의 일원이 되었고 트로잔들은 전설적인 USC의 열정을 함께 나누는 것"이라 언급했다. 또한 "참석한 3200명의 학생들이 3200개의 다른 배경을 갖고 3200개의 다른 길을 걸어가지만 결국 우리모두는 트로잔이다"라고 하고 또한 "꿈을 이룬 사람들을 꿈꾸지 말고, 자신의  꿈을 이루기 위해 열심히 공부하고 일할 것" 을 당부했다. 한편 학부 학생회 회장인 Trenton Stone과 대학원 학생회의 회장인 Skye Parral 역시 신입생을 위한 격려사를  전했다.

USC가 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education survey에서 801개의 전미 고등교육기관 순위에서 18위에 선정됐다. 미서부지역에서는 122개의 교육기관중에서 칼텍과 스탠포드에 이어 3위에 해당한다. 이 랭킹은 대학이 학생들에게 성공할 수 있는 충분한 resource를 제공하는가, 학생들 자신이 도전하며 또한 참여하고 있다고 느끼게 해주는가, 또한 학생들 구성이 다양하며 국제적인가, 졸업 후 만족할만한 보수의 직업을 가질 수 있는가 등 여러가지 종합적인 기준에 의해 매겨진 것이다. USC는 특히 학생들을 위한  최적의  학습환경 조성, 학생과 교수진의 다양성면에서 톱20 대학중 3위를 차지했다. USC는 톱 20 대학중 가장 많은 수의 학부생이 재학하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

USC is ranked No. 18 in the just-released Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education survey of 801 U.S. colleges and universities.

Within the West region, the university placed third out of 122 institutions, behind Caltech and Stanford University.

The annual ranking uses a set of comprehensive metrics to determine whether a college offers students sufficient resources to succeed, whether students feel challenged and engaged, whether the student body is diverse and international, and whether graduates succeed by paying off their loans and are able to find satisfying, high-paying jobs.

USC Viterbi 공대동문인 Patrick Fuscoe부부가 USC Viterbi School of Engineering에 1천만 달러, Kaufman School of Dance와 USC School of Cinematic Arts에 각각 백만 달러를 기부했다. 이 기부금은 세 대학의 교육프로그램과 실험실, 학생과 교수진을 위한 시설과 학제간 활동 등을 위한 재원으로 사용될 예정이다.  Patrick Fuscoe는 Torrance 출신으로,1992년 3명의 직원을 가진 조그만 회사 Fuscoe Engineering을 설립하여 그후 국제적인 명성을 가진 대형 엔지니어링 회사로 성장시켰다. 널리 알려진 프로젝트로는 Irvine에 완성한 2천 에이커의 계획 커뮤니티인 Woodbrdige를 꼽을 수 있다. 부인 Bonnie Fuscoe역시 USC동문이며 딸 Sally도 USC에서 Dance와 Cinematic Arts를 공부했고 아들 Patric Jr.는  Viterbi 공대에서 Computer Science 석사학위를 받았다. Fuscoe가족은 USC의 미래지향적이고 창조적인 비전을 신뢰하며, 그들의 기부가 새로운 전설로서 후대의 트로잔 가족들에게 이어지기를 바란다고 했다. 

Longtime USC supporters Patrick and Bonnie Fuscoe have given $10 million to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and $1 million each to the USC Kaufman School of Dance and USC School of Cinematic Arts.

The gifts will support the general funds of the three schools, which are used to fund educational programs, laboratory spaces, facilities and interdisciplinary activities that benefit students and faculty members.  Read More
