USC Commencement 2016

USC's 133rd commencement ceremony was held on May 13th with nearly 17,000 degrees given to a diverse group of USC graduates, representing all 50 states and 112 nations. Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corp., stood as the main speaker to share his advice he received from his longtime friend Steve Jobs to pursue your own dreams, not the dreams of others. Along with Ellison, first African-American LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey and four others were presented with honorary degrees.

During the commencement, Class of 2016’s valedictorian Sulekha Ramayya and salutatorians Ryan Lindveit and Adrienne Visani were recognized for their achievements. Sulekha Ramayya was honored for her dedication to helping combat malaria outbreaks in developing nations. Read more

지난 5월 13일, USC의 133번째 졸업식이 개최되어 약 1만 7천명의 학생이 학위를 수여받았다. 이날 행사에는 Oracle Corp.의 창립자 Larry Ellison이 축사연사로 등장하여, 졸업생들에게 진정한 자신의 꿈을 쫓아가라는 메시지를 전했다. 졸업식에서는  Larry Ellison을 비롯해 첫 흑인 LA County District Attorney인 Jackie Lacey등 6명이 명예 학위를 받았다. 올해의 수석졸업생은 Bio Medical Engineering을 전공한 Sulekha Ramayya이 차지했다. 그녀는 USC Renaissance and Presidential Scholar로서 말라리아를 퇴치하기 위한 비영리재단을 세우기도 했다. 한편 졸업생 중에는 96세의 최고령자인 Alfonso Gonzales가 포함되어 주목을 받았는데, 그는 2차 세계대전 참전용사로 USC에 입학한지 69년만에 학위를 받게 됐다. 

President Barack Obama awarded Mark Humayun, co-director of the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute and director of the USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation during a ceremony at the White House.

Humayun was chosen for his lifelong dedication to bridging medical science and engineering to restore sight. His innovative work is best exemplified by the development of the Argus II, the only Food and Drug Administration-approved retinal prosthesis system that allows those with certain blinding diseases to regain some useful vision. Read more

USC Gayle and Roski Eye Institute의 공동 디렉터이자 USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics의 디렉터인 Mark Humayun교수가 오바마 대통령으로부터 National Medal of Technology and Innovation을 수상했다. 이것은 과학자나 엔지니어, 발명가가 미국 정부로부터 수여 받는 최고의 명예로, 미국의 경제, 환경 혹은 사회 복지에 관해  탁월한 업적을 남긴 이를 기리는 상이다.  Humayun은 의학과 공학을 접목시켜 시력 회복 연구에 이바지한 공로로 이 상을 수상하게 됐다. 그의 대표적인 업적은 생체공학 시스템인 Argus II이다. 이것은 미국 식품의약국(FDA)의 허가를 받은 유일한 망막보철시스템으로, 황반변성과 같은 시력 소실을 유발하는 병을 앓는 사람들에게 일부 시력을 회복할 수 있게 한다.

Ellison's $200 Million Gift for the Establishment of Ellison Institute

Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corp., has donated $200 million to establish the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC, a new center in Los Angeles that will combine interdisciplinary research with the holistic prevention and treatment of cancer. The new institute will invite mathematicians, physicists, and other scientists to collaborate with cancer researchers, which will yield up new insights currently hidden in existing patient data. David B. Agus, a professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, will lead the institute.

Oracle Corp. 의 창립자 Larry Ellison이 Keck 의과대학내에 Ellison Institute을 창립하기 위해  2억 달러를 기부했다. 이 연구소는 암 예방 및 치료에 관한 연구 교육기관으로서 수학자, 물리학자 등 여러 방면의 과학자들과 암 연구자들이 협력하여 새로운 연구 개발에 주력할 예정이다. USC Keck 의과대학과 Viterbi 공과대학 교수를 겸하고 있는 David B. Agus가 앞으로 연구소를 이끌게 된다. USC는 암치료와 예방을 위한 신기술 투자에 힘을 쏟아왔다. 이번 그의 기부는 근래에 들어 가장 큰 금액으로서, 학교의 암 치료와 예방 연구에 크게 이바지할 것으로 기대된다.      

Kang Young-Hoon, Distinguished USC Alumnus, Dies at 94

Former Prime Minister and an esteemed alumnus of USC, Kang Young-Hoon has died at the age of 94 on May 10. He received a doctorate degree in Political Science from USC. Kang served as a prime minister of the sixth Korean republic from 16 December 1988 until 27 December 1990. After leaving government, Kang went on to become President of the South Korean National Red Cross. At 2013 Global USC Conference in Seoul, he received a special citation by USC President C. L. Max Nikias. A public funeral was held at Seoul Asan Medical Center.

USC동문이자 전 대한민국 국무총리를 역임했던 강영훈 박사가 지난 5월 10일, 향년 94세를 일기로 타계했다. 그는 USC에서 정치학 박사를 받고 한국외국어대학원장, 외무부 외교안보위원장, 국회의원을 거쳐 국무총리를 역임했다. 특히 총리 재임기간 남북총리회담을 성사시키면서 남북관계에 새 지평을 열기도 했다. 퇴임 후 대한 적십자사 총재로 일하기도 했으며, 2013년 서울에서 열린 USC Global Conference에서 USC로부터 공로패를 수상했다. 장례는 사회장으로 치뤄졌다.
