USC Scend Off in Korea Successfully Held

2016년 USC Scend Off 가 지난 7월 14일 TCC아트홀에서 열렸다. Scend Off
는 USC총동문회에서 주최하는 것으로서, 새로 트로잔 가족이 되는 신입생을 환영하고 그들에게 학업에 필요한 정보를 주기위해 매년 열리는
행사이다. 특히 한국에서는 20,30 대 동문들로 구성된 Trojan 21 및 USC 한국학생 단체 간부들이 주축이 되어 준비와 진행을 맡고
있다. 이날 행사에는 USC한국동문회의 박현준 총무와 USC Korea의 최희연 대표, USC한국학부모회의 김은경 회장을 비롯해서 재학생,
신입생과 그들의 학부모 등 약 40명이 참석했다. 또한 행사가 끝난 후에는 학부모들이 따로 모여 인사를 나누고 학부모회의 가입과 서로 궁금한
점에 관해 의견을 교환했다. 학부모회의 가입을 원하는 학부모는 tpnkorea@gmail.com 으로 문의하면 된다.
이번 Scend Off 행사에 초청한 2016년 가을 학기에 입학하는 USC 학부 신입생과 편입생의
수는 약 30명이다. |

| On July 10,
USC SCend Off was held at TCC Art
Hall in Seoul. "SCend Off" is an annual event hosted by USC Alumni Association
that welcomes new students. The event attracted about 40 people including
students and their parents. Attendees were greeted by welcome speeches by Park,
Hyun-Joon, the secretary of USC Korean Alumni Club, Choi, Hee-Yeon, Director of
USC Korea and Kim, Eun-Kyung, President of Trojan Parents Network in Korea.
Several staffs from Trojan 21 and USC Korean students organization shared
presentations and orientations related to academics, on/off campus life, and
general tips about LA life during the event. Following presentations, parents
had a separate gathering and talked about joining Trojan Parents Network and
various other topics.

Wins its First Women's Capital One Cup as Top Athletics Program

USC won
its first Women's Capital One Cup, a prestigious annual all-sports competition
that determines the best women’s and men’s Division I collegiate athletics
programs.
USC
also was fourth in the 2015-16 Learfield Directors’ Cup Division I final
standings, which annually decides the nation’s most broad-based athletic program
by combining men’s and women’s finishes in 10 sports each. The university was
just half a point out of third place. That was the Trojans’ fourth Top 10 finish
in the past five years, and it follows their best-ever third place finish in

USC 여자 스포츠 프로그램이 Women's Capital One Cup의 1위에 올랐다.
Capital One Cup은 Division I 에 속한 대학들의 학생 스포츠 프로그램을 평가하는 것으로서 전미 대학 체육협회 (NCAA )
18개 스포츠 경기 대회의 최종 성적을 바탕으로 점수가 매겨진다. 12 개의 팀이 있는 USC 여자 스포츠는 올해 Beach
volleyball과 water polo에서 NCAA 왕관을 차지했으며, lacrosse, volleyball, golf,track 등에서도
좋은 성적을 거두어 스탠포드와 Penn State를 제치고 종합 1위에 올랐다. 부상으로는 학생 체육 장학금으로 2십만 달러를 받게 된다. 한편
남자 스포츠 부문에서는 스탠포드 대학이 1위를 차지했고 USC는 32위에 올랐다. 또한 USC는 10종목의 여자·남자팀의 성적을 바탕으로 대학
운동부의 순위를 매기는 Learfield Sports Director's Cup Division 1에서 2015-2016년도 4위에 올랐다.

and Children's Hospital Los Angeles Receive $37 Million Grant

A team of researchers led by Thomas Buchanan, Michele
Kipke and Jonathan Samet of the Keck School of Medicine of USC has received a
Clinical and Translational Science Award
(CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health.
The award, which was made June 30 to USC and Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles, is the second in the history of the two institutions. It
will provide $36.6 million over five years to support continuation of the Southern California Clinical and
Translational Science Institute, the hub for community engagement in clinical
and translational research at USC and CHLA. The grant will allow the SC CTSI to continue to provide critical
resources to help advance cutting-edge research and scientific breakthroughs in
patient and community health, with a special focus on diverse and vulnerable
populations.
The Clinical and Translational Science Award program was established by the National
Institutes of Health in 2006. It provides funding to more than 60 major research
universities to support the development,
conduct and improvement of clinical and translational research. Read

Samet이 이끄는 연구진이 미국국립보건원의 Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA)를 수상했다.
6월 30일 USC와 로스앤젤레스 소아병원(CHLA)에 수여된 이상은 두 기관 역사상 두번째 수상으로서, USC와 CHLA산하
남캘리포니아의 Clinical and Translational 연구소에 5년에 걸쳐 3천 6백 6십만 달러를 지원한다. 이번 지원금은 환자와
지역 의료, 특히 다양한 취약집단에 중점을 둔 첨단 연구에 쓰일 예정이다.
미국국립보건원이 2006년 제정한 Clinical and
Translational Science Award 프로그램은 Clinical and Translational 분야의 연구를 위해, 60여 개의
주요 연구대학을 지원하고 있다.

13th USC -KAFE Summer Seminar Takes Place at USC

USC Korean
Studies Institute with the Korea Foundation and USC East Asian Studies Center,
and in partnership with the Korea Academy for Educators, hosted a 30-hour professional
development workshop for K-12 teachers from across the United States on July
18-22.
The program included introductory lectures on Korean history,
politics, religion, culture, and Korean-American immigration, and provided tools
and resources to help teachers integrate Korea into their curriculum. The
Workshop is open to teachers of all subjects including and not limited to
history, social studies, arts and language.
USC 한국학 연구소 및 '교육자를 위한 한국아카데미'가 주관하고 Korean Foundation이
후원하는 제 13회 USC -KAFE 여름 캠프가 7월 18-22일 USC캠퍼스에서 열렸다. 올해에는 미 전역 14개 주에서 40여 명의
교사가 참가하여 한국 문화와 역사, 사회 등 전반에 걸쳐 배웠으며 한국음식과 태권도 등도 체험했다. 이 행사는 한국문화에 대해 접할 기회가
많지 않은 미국 초중교 교사들에게 한국에 대한 지식과 이해를 높이는 목적으로 열려왔다. 특히 올해에는 20여 명의 역사교사들이
참가하여, 한국의 역사를 올바로 알리는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대하고 있다. | | | |
