26일 오후 7시 "라움"에서 USC Admitted Student Event가 열렸다. 이는 새로 USC 학부 입학허가를 받은 한국 학생들을
초대하여 기쁨을 함께 나누고, 유익한 정보를 전달하는 행사이다. 약 50명의 학생과 학부모, USC 한국대표부의 직원들이 참석한 가운데 USC의
Lisa Rhone, Assistant Dean of Admission과 Alexander Alvendia, International
Admission Officer, Undergraduate Admission은 입학에 필요한 절차와 USC의 학생 서비스 및 LA 생활에 관해
소개를 했다. 또한 이 자리에는 현재 한국에 교환학생으로 있는 USC 학생들과 한국학부모회의 멤버들이 초대되여 참석한 학생 및 학부모들과
교류를 나누고 이들의 궁금한 점에 관해 답변을 해주었다. 한편 오는 7월에 USC 한국동문회에서 주최하는 USC 신입생을 위한 Scend
Off가 열릴
예정이다. | |
| On
April 26th, USC Admitted Students Event took place at The Raum in Seoul. The
purpose of this event is to congratulate admitted students in Korea and give
them insights about USC. About 50 admitted students and their parents attended
the event. Lisa Rhone, Assistant Dean of Admission, and Alexander Alvendia,
International Admission Officer at Undergraduate Admission and two staffs from
USC Korea attended the event to introduce the next procedures for enrollment as
well as USC’s student services and LA life. In addition, USC exchange students
in Korea together with a few members of Trojan Parents Network of Korea joined
the event for a Q&A session. In July, USC Alumni Club of Korea will hold a
Scend Off event for USC Korean freshmen.

Family invites 8,980 exceptional students for fall 2017
admission
USC는
2017년 가을 학기 56,000 명의 지원자 중에서 8,980 명의 학생을 선발했다. 56,000 명의 지원자수는 작년에 비해 3.5% 증가한
것으로 이들 중 16%의 학생만이 입학허가를 받아 역대 최고의 경쟁률을 기록했다. 선발된 학생의 평균 GPA는 3.84이고, 31%는 GPA
4.0을 갖고 있는 학생들이다. 또한 42%의 학생들은 SAT와 같은 능력 평가시험에서 상위 1% 안에 들어가는 최우수학생이다. Timothy
Brunold, Dean of Admission은 USC 입학허가의 기준은 단지 이러한 학업 점수뿐 아니라, 학생의 전인적인 특성 및 USC
Community를 풍요롭게 할 수 있는 여러 가지 요소들도 고려한다고 말했다. 미국내 학생은 캘리포니아 주 출신이 가장 많으며, 선발학생 중
16 %를 차지하는 해외학생은 중국, 인도, 캐나다, 한국 학생의
순이다.

USC
made a tough decision to select 8,980 students out of 56,000 applicants for fall
2017 admission. The field of 56,000 applicants, which is an increase of 3.5
percent from last year, is a USC record. Academically, the freshman class is
made up of the top 10 percent of their high school’s graduating class, with 42
percent scoring in the 99th percentile. By increasing student aid 76 percent
since 2007, USC offers one of the biggest financial aid pools in the country. Read

USC professors honored as 2017 Guggenheim
Fellows
USC
교수진 3명이 세계적 권위의 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship 수상자에 선정됐다. USC Viterbi 공과대학의 전기 공학,
화학, 물리학 교수 Daniel Lidar, USC Dornsife 인문대의 인류학 교수 Cheryl Mattingly, 그리고 USC
Dornsife의 영어학 학과장 Viet Thanh Nguyen교수가 수상자들이다. 구겐하임 펠로우십은 1925년에 설립된 존 사이먼 구겐하임
기념재단이 뛰어난 창의성을 가진 학자와 예술가들을 지원하는 그랜트 프로그램이다. 매년 3000명 후보 중 175명 가량이 수상을 하며, 올해는
173 명의 학자, 예술가 및 과학자들이 선정됐다.
2017년
한국인 수상자로는 예일대의 오 희 수학과 교수 및 뉴욕에서 활동하고 있는 미술작가인 바이런 김과 이지은 씨
3명이다.
Three USC
faculty members have been honored with prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships for
2017. Daniel Lidar, a professor of electrical engineering, chemistry and physics
at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering; Cheryl Mattingly, professor of
anthropology at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences; and Viet
Thanh Nguyen, Aerol Arnold Chair of English and professor of English and
American studies and ethnicity at USC Dornsife, were among a diverse group of
173 scholars, artists and scientists selected by the John Simon Guggenheim
Memorial Foundation to pursue research and literary projects. Read

영화제작자이자 USC 동문인 George Lucas와 그의 Family는 지난 2016년 가을, 영화학교의 인종적 다양성과 저소득층 학생들을
재정적으로 지원하기 위해 초기 천만 달러 기부금으로 George Lucas Family Foundation Endowed
Student Support Fund for Diversity를 설립했다. 이 재단의 지원금은 아프리카계 학생 및 히스패닉 학생들이 우선적으로
받을 계획이다.

| The
George Lucas Family Foundation has expanded its support of student diversity
with a second $10 million endowment to the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
The George Lucas Family Foundation was established at the school in fall 2016
with an initial $10 million endowment for students from underrepresented
communities who qualify for financial support. African-American and Hispanic
students in both undergraduate and graduate programs receive priority
consideration for support from the Fund. Read more

4월 22일, 캘리포니아의 억만장자 사업가이며 독지가인 Rick J. Caruso가 USC Alumni Association에서 가장 학교와
지역사회를 위해 공헌한 이에게 주는 상인 Asa V. Call 상을 수상했다. 그는 USC 재단 이사이자 부동산 기업인 ‘Caruso
Affiliated’의 CEO이다. 이 회사는 “Grove” 와 “The Americana at Brand” 등 수많은 부동산 프로젝트를
개발하고 운영해왔다. Caruso는 USC에 5천만 달러 이상을 기부해 왔으며, 그 중 2천5백만 달러는 미국에서 가장 규모가 크고 최첨단
연구와 치료시설을 갖춘 USC Tina and Rick Caruso Dept. of Otolaryngology (이비인후과학) 설립에
쓰였다. USC Alumni Association은 매년 학교와 지역사회에 공헌한 동문들을 뽑아 치하해왔는데, 올해에는 Caruso 이외에도
6명의 동문들이 선정됐다. |

April 22, USC honored Trustee Rick J. Caruso ’80 with its most distinguished
alumni honor, the Asa V. Call Award, at its 83rd annual Alumni Awards. The Asa
V. Call Award is given to an alumnus who has shown exceptional commitment to the
university and the community by generously giving their time, energy and
leadership. The Carusos have donated more than $50 million to USC, most recently
$25 million to endow the USC Tina and Rick Caruso Department of
Otolaryngology. The USC Alumni Association also recognized six notable Trojans
for their achievements and contributions to the university. Read more
