지난 7월 13일 여의도 국회의사당에서 USC 한국동문회 IT 소모임이 열렸다. 십여 명이 참석한 가운데 IT 소모임 윤대균 회장과 김보근 총무의 인사말로 행사는 시작됐다. 이번 모임의 주제는 새로운 금융시스템 및 이를 뒷바침하는 기술로 급부상한 Blockchain과 FinTech에 관한 것이었다. 강사로 초빙된 고려대학교 정보보호대학원 김형중 교수는 디지탈화폐 비트코인과 관련해 암호화 기술인 블록체인, 금융테크놀로지인 핀테크에 대해 두시간 여 동안 강의를 했다. 강의 발표가 끝난 후 참가자들은 질의응답시간을 가지기도 했다. |

USC IT소모임은 USC 졸업생 중 IT 업계에 종사하시는 동문들간에 정기적으로 교류와 친목을 다지는 모임이다. 2011년부터 지금까지 매달 정기적으로 모임을 가지고 있으며, 전체 동문들간의 교류를 위해서도 매년 IT세미나를 진행하고 있다. IT 분야에 관심이 있는 동문의 참여를 환영하며, 세미나 참가는 김보근 총무 (이메일: bogeunnet@gmail.com) 에게 연락하면 된다. |

On July 13, USC Alumni Club of Korea IT group gathered at National Assembly in Seoul to study about Blockchain and FinTech. The attendees were greeted by welcome speeches from Daekyun Yoon, President of USC Alumni Club of Korea IT group, and Bogeun Kim, Secretary General of USC Alumni Club of Korea IT group. The study session was led by Professor Hyoung Joong Kim from Korea University. After two hour-long lecture on general knowledge of Blockchain and detailed explanation of cryptocurrency, the study session ended with a helpful Q&A session during which attendees were able to debate enthusiastically about Blockchain and FinTech.

USC New Parents Welcome Meeting held |

지난 7월 19일 2017년 신입생 학부모를 위한 환영모임이 열렸다. 이는 USC Korea와 USC 한국학부모회가 매년 주최하는 모임으로서, 학기 시작전에 새 학부모들에게 자녀유학에 필요한 정보를 제공하고 학부모회의 설립취지와 활동을 설명하는 행사이다. 이 자리에서 최희연 USC Korea 디렉터는 신입생과 가족을 위한 가이드북을 나누어 주며 비자 인터뷰부터 건강보험, 은행계좌개설 등 현지 초기 정착에 필요한 사항들을 설명했고, 기존 학부모들도 자신들의 구체적인 경험과 조언을 나누었다. TPN은 주로 학부생들의 학부모로 구성되어 있으며 1년에 세 차례의 정기모임을 갖고 있다. 가입을 원하는 새 학부모는 장지원 회장 jiwonchang@yahoo.com 으로 연락하면 된다.
On July 19, a welcoming meeting was held for parents of new USC students. This is an annual event organized by USC Korea and Trojan Parent Network in order to provide new parents with basic information for studying abroad before the start of the school year. At this meeting, Hee Yeon Choi, Director of USC Korea, handed out the guide book explaining the information needed for early settlement including transportation, health insurance, opening a bank account, and etc. The members of TPN also explained the purpose and activities of TPN and shared their personal experiences of sending their children to USC. TPN is mainly composed of parents of undergraduates and holds regular meetings three times a year. USC Viterbi Researcher wins Pathway to Independence Award |

 USC Viterbi 공대의 박사 후 과정 펠로우로 있는 윤상필박사가 명성있는 Pathway to Independence Award (K99)를 수상했다. Viterbi 박사 후 과정 연구진으로서는 처음으로 받는 상이며, 5년 동안 총 93만 2천 달러를 연구 지원금으로 받게 된다. 윤박사는 음향 세포복제(acoustic-transfection)이라 불리는 고주파 울트라사운드를 이용해 큰 분자를 이동시켜 암이나 파킨스병, 알츠하이머 등을 치료하는 연구를 해왔다. 그는 "Viterbi 대학의 최첨단 시설과 장비에 힘입어 내 아이디어를 현실로 구체화할 수 있었다. 이 연구센터야말로 일하고 실험할 수 있는 가장 이상적인 장소이다" 라고 언급했다.
윤박사는 연세대학교에서 기계공학을 전공했으며, Georgia Institute of Technology에서 항공 엔지니어링으로 석사학위를 받았다. 한국으로 돌아와 3년 동안 삼성전자에서 일한 후 Ultrasound imaging과 음향학에 관심을 가지게 되어 University of Texas에서 mechanical&biomedical engineering으로 박사학위를 취득했다. USC Viterbi School of Engineering researcher is using a novel technique to deliver very large molecules to treat cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Sangpil Yoon is using high-frequency ultrasound, called acoustic-transfection, to deliver molecules such as proteins, through the human cells to treat deadly diseases. The promising research has led to Yoon being the first USC Viterbi postdoctoral fellow to win a prestigious Pathway to Independence Award, or K99. Read more |

Thornton School of Music announces five new master's degree programs |

USC Thornton 음악대학은 2018년 새로운 석사학위 프로그램을 개설할 예정이다. 급변하는 음악산업과 음악교육환경에 대응하기 위해 contemporary teaching practice, music industry, community music, arts leadership 및 screen scoring 분야의 다섯 학위과정을 신설한다. 이 중 contemporary teaching practice와 music industry 과정은 2018년 5월에, 나머지 과정은 같은 해 가을에 시작한다. 수업기간과 입학요건은 각 과정마다 상이하다. Community music과 contemporary teaching practice, screen scoring 프로그램은 연주나 작곡분야의 학사학위소지자를 대상으로 하며, art leadership 과정은 음악 예술분야 전공 학위소지여부와는 상관없이 3-5 년경력의 전문예술가를 대상으로 한다. Music industry 과정도 음악학위와는 관련없이 콘서트 프로모션, 음악 산업 등에 관심이 있는 학생이 입학할 수 있다.
Thornton음대의 Robert Cutietta 학장은 오늘날의 음악교육을 혁신하는데 앞장서왔다. 그는 "신설되는 프로그램들은 학생들에게 좀더 다양한 음악분야에 정열을 쏟을 수 있는 기회를 제공하고, 오늘날의 음악 전문직에 대한 새로운 비전을 제시할 수 있을 것"이라 말했다. 자세한 내용은 홈페이지 참조
The USC Thornton School of Music is unveiling five new master’s degree programs in contemporary teaching practice, music industry, community music, arts leadership and screen scoring. The degrees are a response to seismic changes in the music industry and in the music teaching and learning climate. The programs vary in length from one to two years, and some are low-residency, allowing students to keep existing jobs while they pursue coursework. Contemporary teaching practice and music industry will begin classes in May; the community music, screen scoring and arts leadership programs will begin in fall 2018. Read more |

이 온라인 프로그램은 현재 일반의사나 치과의사, 간호원, 심리치료사 등 의료전문인을 대상으로 통증치료나 완화에 대해 다양한 접근으로 교육받는 과정이다. 현재 2017년 8월 시작 프로그램을 위한 지원 접수 중이며, 접수 마감은 8월 5일 이다.
8월 2일에 온라인 설명회가 라이브로 진행된다. 프로그램 디렉터 Dr. Richeimer와 Dr.Clark이 프로그램에 대해 직접 설명할 예정이다. 온라인 설명회 등록은 홈페이지에서 할 수 있다.
